You might be wondering, do I really need to turn my toddler’s lunch into bunnies and chicks? While it’s totally okay if that’s not your thing, adding a little fun or playfulness to food can actually go a long way! There is some research to support that young children are more likely to try and enjoy foods when they’re presented in an engaging or visually appealing way. Think of it as a playful and fun, not pressure, to explore what's in their lunch box!

What’s Inside the Easter Bunny Bento Box:

    • Bunny Sandwich – A soft sandwich cut into a bunny shape (because toddlers love food that looks fun!)
    • Chick Hard-Boiled Egg – A cute little baby chick with two chocolate chip eyes
    • Carrots – Bright carrots whiskers for the bunny, and as the perfect lunchbox side
    • Red Pepper Flowers – Sweet, crunchy, and provide vitamin C
    • Yogurt with Strawberries & Hemp Hearts – Full of healthy fats + fibre

    Ingredients for the Bunny Sandwich

Ingredients for Easter Bunny Sandwich on a white cutting board
    • 2 slices of bread (I like to use a whole wheat bread here)
    • sandwich filling of choice (I used a sunflower seed butter and banana)
    • carrots
    • red pepper
    • strawberries
    • 2 blueberries (use fresh blueberries not frozen for the bunny eyes, otherwise they will make the bread soggy!)

Optional ingredients for remaining bento box:

    • egg
    • 2 chocolate chips
    • small piece carrot
    • yogurt
    • hemp hearts
    • strawberries
    • additional pepper and carrots

    See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions for Making an Easter Bunny Bento Box for Kids

Step 1 for bunny sandwich. Cut the bread into a circle.

Toast the slices of bread (if you wish). Add in the sandwich filling. Put the pieces of bread together, then cut the sandwich into a circle.

Step 2 for bunny sandwich. Cut crust into two ears.

Next, cut the ears from the remaining crust of the sandwich.

Step 3 for bunny sandwich. Decorate bunny face with two blueberries, a strawberry nose, red pepper mouth and carrot whiskers.

Decorate the sandwich with two blueberries for the eyes, a strawberry nose, red pepper mouth and carrot whiskers.

Pack the rest of the bento box. Here the bento box has yogurt with blueberries, hardboiled egg, and carrot slices.

Prepare the remaining bento box items. Make the chick egg. Using a peeled, hardboiled egg, cut halfway to remove the top half of the egg white. Add two chocolate chips for eyes on the yolk, and a piece of carrot for the nose. Add the remaining egg white back onto the egg, above the face.

Feel free to add in other items to the bento box! Cinnamon apples are one of our favourite lunch sides to include or Cinnamon Pears. These Homemade Animal Crackers are also one of our favourite lunchbox snacks!

    FAQ

Can I prep this the night before?

You can partially prep it ahead, but I wouldn’t recommend assembling the whole bento the night before, the sandwich can get soggy. Instead, slice the carrots, cut the red pepper, and chop the strawberries in advance. You can also hard-boil the egg and store it peeled in the fridge. Then in the morning, just put everything together fresh, it only takes a few minutes!

What’s a good sandwich filling for picky eaters?

While it’s important to offer our kids a variety of foods, school lunches are not always the best time to introduce something brand new. Working with familiar favourites that they feel confident eating can be helpful, and then gradually increase variety over time. A classic peanut butter (or seed butter) and banana sandwich or a simple cheese sandwich are generally accepted option, but use the filling that works best for your child.

    Can I make it dairy-free?

Yes! Use a plant-based yogurt (like almond or oat) and pick a dairy-free sandwich filling. There are lots of great sandwich fillings that are dairy-free such as a nut or seed butter and chia jam, banana, hummus, chickpea mash, just to name a few!

    Equipment

    • 1 circle cutter
    • 1 flower shape cutter optional

    Ingredients

    • 2 slices whole grain bread
    • 2 tbsps nut butter or seed butter spread thinly
    • ½ banana
    • 4 strawberries 1 for bunny, the rest for the lunch
    • 2 blueberries plus more for the lunch if you like, use fresh for the bunny's eyes, not frozen
    • ¼ red pepper
    • 1 carrot small piece for bunny, remainder for lunch (steamed if needed)

    Additional Lunchbox Items

    • 1 egg hard-boiled
    • 2 chocolate chips for the chick egg's eyes
    • ½ yogurt, plain, unsweetened optional
    • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts optional

    Instructions

    • First, make the bunny sandwich. Toast two pieces of bread. Spread a thin layer or peanut butter or sunflower seed butter on each layer of bread and mash banana on top of one piece (or use other sandwich filling of choosing). I used sunflower seed butter and banana.
    • Using a circle cutter, cut out a large circle. Cut the leftover crust into two ears (see image above in blog post).
    • Decorate the bunny sandwich. Add two blueberries for the eyes, a strawberry for the nose, and a thin piece of red pepper for the mouth. Add 3 thin slices of carrot on each side for the whiskers.
    • Make the chick egg. Hard-boil an egg and peel. Cut halfway up the egg to remove only the egg white, keeping the yolk intact. Add two chocolate chips onto the egg yolk for eyes, and a small piece of carrot for the nose. Option to add the egg white back on top.
    • Make the rest of the bento box. Cut out shapes from the red pepper if you like. Add in some carrot sticks and red pepper sticks (steam carrots and red peppers for younger children). Add remaining strawberries. Option to add some plain yogurt and hemp hearts.
