Hint: It is important to let the chia seeds soak in the mixture for at least two hours as they expand when in liquid.

    Substitutions

    • Gluten-free - although oats are a whole grain that are naturally gluten-free, in order to ensure this recipe is gluten-free, look for "Certified Gluten-free Oats" as there can be a risk for cross-contamination.

    Equipment

Mason jars work well for making overnight oats, or any sealable container will work.

    Storage

You can store in the fridge in a sealable container for 2-3 days. Give it a good stir before serving as it may thicken up more.

    Toddler tip

When choosing a milk, there can be a few considerations. Cow's milk and soy milk provide the most protein and fat, compared to plant-based beverages like almond or oat. If choosing a plant-based beverage for this recipe, I encourage using an unsweetened one that is fortified with calcium, Vitamin D, and B vitamins.

    FAQ

Can I eat overnight oats warm?

Yes, you can heat up the overnight oats on the stove top or in the microwave (in a microwave safe dish). You may need to add a little more liquid when heating up.

What oats are best to use for overnight oats?

Whole rolled oats are the best option to get a good consistency. Quick oats can get a bit mushy (although if that doesn't bother you, then you can use them!) and steel cut oats won't soak up the liquid and are too firm (they are better for simmering over heat and cooking for a longer period of time).
