    Toddler Tip for Homemade Larabars

These Larabars are such an easy snack for toddlers. We love the convenience of the store bought ones, but often wish a smaller size was available for on the go snacks. So by making your own, you can cut them in half to make individual mini bars, the perfect size for your toddler! Need more snack ideas for your child? Ingredients

Homemade Larabars use such simple ingredients! These ingredients provide a good base, and then you can add in additional mix-ins.

Homemade Larabar ingredients in white ramequins on white marble background.
    • Medjool dates (pitted)
    • peanut butter (smooth)
    • hemp hearts
    • unsweetened shredded coconut
    • vanilla

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Step 1 of homemade Larabars, soaking dates in white bowl in boiling water.

Ensure pits are removed from dates. Soak the dates in boiling water for 10-15 minutes (optional but encouraged!).

Step 2 of homemade larabars, adding all ingredients to a food processor.

Add all the ingredients to the food processor or powerful blender. Blend until ingredients are well mixed

Step 3 of homemade larabars, adding in mix ins and stirring in a blue bowl.

Add in your mix-ins for different flavours. Stir together.

Step 3 of homemade larabars, putting bars into pan and flattening.

Line a square dish with parchment paper. Scoop out the bar mixture into a square pan or loaf dish. Press down firmly with a spatula. Cut into bars.

Hint: If you have the time, it really helps to soak the dates in boiling water for 10-15 minutes first to soften them. This makes blending a lot easier!

    Substitutions

    • Peanut-free - you can swap for almond butter or other nut or seed butter

    Variations

Now that you've got the base recipe, here comes the fun part!

    • Peanut butter chocolate chip - add in ¼ cup milk chocolate or dairy free chocolate chips.
    • Chocolate and cranberry - my personal favourite. Add ¼ cup chocolate chips and ¼ cup dried cranberries.
    • Double chocolate - add ¼ cup cocoa powder and ¼ cup chocolate chips.

*Stir these in AFTER you've blended up the mixture in a food processor.

    Equipment

I recommend using a food processor for these bars or a powerful blender such as a Vitamix.

    Storage

You can store these bars in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week, or at room temperature (sealed) for a couple of days. Unfortunately, I do not recommend freezing these bars as it changes the texture when you go to de-thaw them!

    Top tip

If using a blender, I recommend using one that has a tamper so that you can mash down the ingredients from the side of the blender. This is helpful for these thicker consistencies.

    FAQ

Can I make these Larabars nut-free for school lunches?

Yes! You can swap out the peanut butter and use sunflower seed butter or pumpkin seed butter instead to make them school-safe and nut-free. For more great lunchbox ideas, I have a post on Easy Cold School Lunch Ideas for Kids full of balanced bento box lunches.

Are these Larabars suitable for toddlers?

All children will develop at their own pace when it comes to eating. However, these bars are soft, and all the hard nuts and seeds have been blended up in the food processor, making them a perfect toddler snack!
