Ingredients for Toddler-Friendly 5 Ingredient Banana Oatmeal Cookies

Here is what you'll need for these toddler-friendly cookies!

Ingredients for 5 ingredient banana oatmeal cookies for toddlers
    • Ripe bananas - The riper the better! Those overripe bananas sitting on your counter are perfect for this recipe. They bring all the natural sweetness you need, plus they act as the binder so no eggs or butter required.
    • Rolled oats - The base of these cookies! Oats are a great source of fibre and keep little ones fuller for longer. You can also swap for quick oats if you prefer a softer texture.
    • Cinnamon - A little goes a long way and it pairs so well with banana. Cinnamon adds a cozy warmth to these cookies. (I hate using the word cozy to describe recipes but it is needed here).
    • Ground flaxseed - This is the little nutritional boost that sets these cookies apart! Ground flaxseed is one of the best plant-based sources of omega-3s, which are so important for brain development in toddlers. It also adds extra fibre and because it's ground, it blends right in.
    • Chocolate chips - And of course, a few chocolate chips for a little fun! We love using Enjoy Life dairy-free chocolate chips - they're free from the top allergens which is always a bonus for little ones.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

    mashed banana in blue bowl.

In a medium bowl, mash the bananas.

All ingredients added to a bowl.

Add the oats, cinnamon, ground flaxseed, and chocolate chips.

Ingredients for 5 ingredient cookies mixed in a bowl.

    Mix everything together.

5 ingredient cookie batter spooned out onto lined baking sheet.

Scoop out 1-2 tbsps dough onto the lined baking sheet and gently pat down. Bake at 350 degrees F for 12-15 minutes.

Hint: The mixture may feel a bit wet, but don't worry, they will come together in the oven!

    Substitutions

    • Oats: You can use quick oats for a softer texture or rolled oats for a slightly chewier cookie.
    • Ground flax: Swap with chia seeds or hemp hearts.
    • Chocolate chips: Replace with raisins, chopped dates, or shredded coconut for some different options. (But who doesn't love a few chocolate chips added in!?)
    • Banana: Banana is key for binding and sweetness in this recipe, so it’s not easily substituted. Make sure they’re nice and ripe for best results.

    Variations

    • Peanut butter banana: Add 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter for a delicious PB & banana flavour combo
    • Blueberry banana: Swap chocolate chips for dried or freeze-dried blueberries
    • Coconut banana: Add 1-2 tablespoons of unsweetened shredded coconut

    Equipment

    • Medium bowl

    Storage

Store these cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze them for up to 2 months.

To serve, let them thaw at room temperature or warm slightly to soften. The cookies will stay soft, but may firm up a bit in the fridge, so letting them sit out for a few minutes can help bring back that softer texture.

    Toddler Tip

This is a great recipe to make with your child! My daughter loves to sample the dough, and I love not having to worry about any raw ingredients in these cookies while she's taste testing. Let your child help scoop, measure, and stir!
