Building a Balanced Lunch for Kids
When building out a balanced lunch, it can be helpful to think about including foods from each "building block":
- Protein-rich foods
- Healthy fats
- Fibrous carbohydrates
- Colour (fruits & veggies)
- Something fun!
That said, not every lunchbox needs to tick every single box. Perfection is not the goal! Aim to include a variety of foods, ideally from at least 2-3 of the groups above, and include something that you know your child enjoys.

Tips for Picky Eaters at School
Are you finding it tricky to find foods your child will eat at school? Here are a few things to consider. And just a gentle reminder, some selective eating among children is fairly common. While it can be challenging not having control over the school lunch environment, offering a variety of foods without pressure, and providing a supportive and safe eating environment at home, can help build confidence and curiosity over time. Here are a few tips to help at school!
Tip #1 - Involve your child in packing their lunch. Now, I get it, often lunches are being made at night once the kids are in bed or last minute while the kids are having breakfast. But if possible, see if there is something small your child could help with. Such as adding some fruits and veggies to their lunchbox and deciding which compartment to put them in, or choosing their mix-ins for their pizza muffins like in the recipe below!
Tip #2 - Include a preferred or favourite food in your child's lunch. If the whole lunch is full of new things, or foods your child doesn't enjoy eating, they may struggle to have enough to eat.
Tip #3 - Check in with the mealtime environment at school. Ask your child if they feel they have enough time to eat their lunch, or are they distracted at lunch time. It can also be helpful to check in with their containers and packaging to see if they are experiencing any challenges with opening items.
Tips for Cold School Lunch Ideas
1. Use two ice packs to keep food safe
Layer one ice pack at the bottom and another on top of the lunchbox to help keep perishable items like dairy, meat, and eggs at a safe temperature until lunch. This simple trick helps prevent spoilage and supports food safety, especially during warm weather or long school days.
2. Choose foods that hold their texture
Some foods can go soggy and become unappetizing after a few hours. Stick to items that hold up well cold, like fruits (berries, apple slices), veggies, pasta salads, or whole grain crackers.
3. Pack the night before (when possible)
Mornings are hectic. Packing lunches the night before can make a big difference, or at least packing some components. Most cold lunch components hold up well overnight in the fridge, and having everything ready to go reduces stress and increases the chance of offering variety (instead of scrambling for crackers at 7 a.m.).
