school lunch meal plan for picky eaters

Have a picky eater? Feeling like you can only send the same thing over and over? As a dietitian and mom to a picky eater, I've created a One Week School Lunch Meal Plan specifically for picky eaters! Think snacky lunches, deconstructed lunches, and ideas to boost basic pastas, as well as tips to slowly increase the variety of foods you are sending.

Building a Balanced Lunch for Kids

When building out a balanced lunch, it can be helpful to think about including foods from each "building block":

    • Protein-rich foods
    • Healthy fats
    • Fibrous carbohydrates
    • Colour (fruits & veggies)
    • Something fun!

That said, not every lunchbox needs to tick every single box. Perfection is not the goal! Aim to include a variety of foods, ideally from at least 2-3 of the groups above, and include something that you know your child enjoys.

Tips for Picky Eaters at School

Are you finding it tricky to find foods your child will eat at school? Here are a few things to consider. And just a gentle reminder, some selective eating among children is fairly common. While it can be challenging not having control over the school lunch environment, offering a variety of foods without pressure, and providing a supportive and safe eating environment at home, can help build confidence and curiosity over time. Here are a few tips to help at school!

Tip #1 - Involve your child in packing their lunch. Now, I get it, often lunches are being made at night once the kids are in bed or last minute while the kids are having breakfast. But if possible, see if there is something small your child could help with. Such as adding some fruits and veggies to their lunchbox and deciding which compartment to put them in, or choosing their mix-ins for their pizza muffins like in the recipe below!

Tip #2 - Include a preferred or favourite food in your child's lunch. If the whole lunch is full of new things, or foods your child doesn't enjoy eating, they may struggle to have enough to eat.

Tip #3 - Check in with the mealtime environment at school. Ask your child if they feel they have enough time to eat their lunch, or are they distracted at lunch time. It can also be helpful to check in with their containers and packaging to see if they are experiencing any challenges with opening items.

Tips for Cold School Lunch Ideas

    1. Use two ice packs to keep food safe
Layer one ice pack at the bottom and another on top of the lunchbox to help keep perishable items like dairy, meat, and eggs at a safe temperature until lunch. This simple trick helps prevent spoilage and supports food safety, especially during warm weather or long school days.

    2. Choose foods that hold their texture
Some foods can go soggy and become unappetizing after a few hours. Stick to items that hold up well cold, like fruits (berries, apple slices), veggies, pasta salads, or whole grain crackers.

    3. Pack the night before (when possible)

Mornings are hectic. Packing lunches the night before can make a big difference, or at least packing some components. Most cold lunch components hold up well overnight in the fridge, and having everything ready to go reduces stress and increases the chance of offering variety (instead of scrambling for crackers at 7 a.m.).

Ok, let's dive into the list of 15 easy cold lunch ideas!

    • Watermelon

#8 - Supercharged Nut Butter & Chia Jam Sandwich Roll-Ups

Peanut butter and chia jam sandwich roll ups in toddler bento box with hardboiled egg, blueberries, carrots and puffs.

Sometimes serving a sandwich in a different form makes it all the more exciting! This supercharged nut and seed butter and chia jam roll-up is a fun way of doing just that! Simply taking a slice of bread (or two), toast it, roll it out, spread a thin layer of the nut butter on a slice, then add some chia jam, roll it up and cut it into appropriate size pieces. If you don't want to make the supercharged nut butter, you can use a regular peanut butter or other nut or seed butter.

    Included in the lunchbox:

    • Supercharged nut and seed butter and chia jam whole wheat sandwich roll up
    • Hardboiled egg
    • Blueberries (flatten for younger children)
    • Carrot sticks (steam for younger children)
    • Puffs

    #9 - Yogurt Parfait Bento

Greek yogurt parfait in bento box served with granola, coconut, strawberries, carrots and cucumbers.

Build-your-own parfait bento is such a fun lunch idea for kids. They'll love getting to have some choice over their parfait building. Add kid-friendly granola, yogurt, and then any other parfait toppings like shredded coconut, berries, and hemp hearts.

#10 Pita and Hummus Bento box

Hummus and pita bento box for kids served with mango, carrots and snap peas.

    • Pita slices
    • Hummus
    • Carrots (steam for younger children)
    • Snap peas
    • Cut-up mango

#11 - Easy Cheesy Pasta Noodle Salad

Easy cheesy rotini pasta noodles bento box served with half a muffin, avocado, puffs and apple pieces.

We all know sometimes we just need a good classic lunch that we know our child loves. This cheesy pasta is it for us. We cook up some rotini noodles (or any noodles of choice), add some butter or olive oil, and a little cheese and my kids love it hot or cold!

    Included in the lunchbox:

    • Apple slices (steam for younger children)
    • Half a muffin like these Apple and Pear Crumble Muffins or high protein Cottage Cheese Blueberry Muffins
    • Avocado slices
    • Puffs

    #12 - Muffin Bento

Two cottage cheese mini muffins in a bento box served with Greek yogurt, strawberries, carrots and cucumbers.

I love a good muffin bento box. Batch prep some muffins like these high protein Cottage Cheese Blueberry Muffins, these easy ABC Muffins (apple, banana, carrot), or use up some summer blackberries and make these Banana Blackberry Muffins. Then you've got muffins on hand for the whole week and are great for lunch boxes, breakfasts, or on-the-go snacks!

#13 - Deconstructed Chicken Caesar Wrap

Deconstructed chicken Caesar wrap with pita in one compartment, chicken slices, shredded lettuce and caesar dressing served with a muffin and strawberry slices in a bento box.

Deconstructed Chicken Caesar Wraps are a great way to use up leftover chicken from dinner the night before, plus kids love deconstructed meals that they can build themselves! Simply shred up some whole wheat tortilla, add some diced chicken (making sure the chicken was already cooked to an appropriate temperature), add some Caesar dressing, and shredded lettuce!

    Included in the lunchbox:

    • Whole wheat tortilla
    • Cooked and cooled chicken
    • Caesar dressing
    • Shredded lettuce
    • Lemon Blueberry Muffin
    • Strawberries

    #14 - Rice Cake Sandwich

I know rice cakes get a bad wrap and don't provide a whole lot of lasting energy for kids. However, they can be a great vehicle for adding nutrition and some kids really love the crunch! I love spreading some peanut butter, or a high protein edamame guacamole on top to transform rice cakes into a great lunch option! Just a note, they can soften up a bit, or get a bit soggy if they come into contact with moisture. So I highly recommend putting them in a ziplock or keeping them in a separate compartment from other foods to prevent them from becoming soggy by lunchtime.

    Included in the lunchbox:

    • Two rice cake sandwiches with Supercharged Nut & Seed Butter
    • Blueberries (flattened for younger children)
    • Hardboiled egg
    • Red bell pepper (steam for younger children)
    • That's It Bar

    #15 - Pancake Breakfast Bento

High protein banana cottage cheese pancakes served with banana and strawberries in toddler bowl.

Who doesn't love breakfast for lunch!? A breakfast pancake lunchbox is such a fun option for your child. Try making these protein-packed Cottage Cheese Banana Pancakes, or these simple Greek yogurt mini pancakes.

    Included in the lunchbox:

    • Greek yogurt mini pancakes
    • Banana and strawberries
    • Extra yogurt for dipping
    • Steamed carrots
