Ingredients for Peanut Butter Chia Seed Crackers for Kids

Ingredients for peanut butter chia seed crackers for kids
    • All purpose flour
    • Brown sugar
    • Baking powder
    • Dash of salt
    • Peanut butter (smooth, all natural)
    • Chia seeds
    • Milk of choice (I used unsweetened almond milk)

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Here is an overview of how to make these crackers, or you can scroll down to the recipe card for full details.

Dry ingredients added to a bowl, ready to be stirred.

In a medium bowl, add the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and chia seeds.

    Dry ingredients stirred together.

Mix together and form a well in the middle.

Dough formed into a ball in a blue bowl.

Add the peanut butter and milk and stir to combine. You may need to use your hands to knead the dough until it forms a smooth ball.

    Dough rolled into a rectangle.

Place the dough ball between two sheets of parchment paper and roll out into a thin rectangle, less than ⅛ inch thick, (or as close to a rectangle as possible!).

Peanut butter crackers cut into squares, ready to be baked.

Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the dough into vertical lines and then crosswise to form small cracker shapes.

peanut butter chia seed crackers baked on a baking sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 15-18 minutes, until golden brown on top.

Hint: When rolling out your dough, try to keep the thickness as even as possible across the whole rectangle. If the edges are thinner than the centre, they'll brown faster and may overcook before the middle crackers are done.

    Substitutions

    • Milk - Any milk will work in this recipe, including regular cow's milk, or dairy-free alternatives like almond milk or oat milk. (I used unsweetened almond milk).
    • Chia seeds - Hemp hearts work great as a swap if that's what you have on hand.

    Variations

    • Cinnamon - Add a pinch of cinnamon to the dry ingredients for a warm, cozy flavour.
    • Vanilla - Stir a splash of vanilla extract in with the wet ingredients for a subtle sweetness.

    Equipment

    • Medium bowl
    • Baking sheet

    How To Store Homemade Crackers

Store these crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. You can also prep the dough ahead of time and store it in the fridge for 2-3 days before baking.

    Toddler Tip

Pair these crackers with a dip for an easy, balanced snack! They go great with yogurt, a coconut dip, or a homemade chia jam for a little extra nutrition and fun at snack time.

    FAQ

Why did my crackers come out too soft?

The most likely culprit is the dough being rolled out too thick. Make sure you're rolling to less than ⅛ inch thick and that the thickness is even across the whole rectangle. If they're still soft after baking, pop them back in the oven for a few extra minutes, they will continue to crisp up a little as they cool too.

Can I make these nut-free for daycare or school lunchboxes?

I haven't tested these with a nut-free butter like sunflower seed butter or pumpkin seed butter. I did try them with almond butter for a peanut-free option and this worked well.
