Both my daughters started daycare right around the age of one. I remember feeling very overwhelmed with what to pack for lunches. It can be a lot to think about - what foods can they eat with a bit more independence that aren't too messy (I was kindly asked to please stop sending chia pudding!), while still providing a balance of foods and nutrition? What Are Finger Foods?
Finger foods are foods that children can pick up and eat independently using their hands. For one year olds, finger foods can help support self-feeding skills, fine motor development, and exposure to different flavours and textures. Finger foods can include everything from muffins and fritters to pasta, fruit, vegetables, and modified family meals.
Benefits of Finger Foods for One Year Olds
I especially find finger foods helpful for young toddlers transitioning to daycare and for parents who need lunch and snack ideas that their child can eat with some independence and without too much mess. Having had two kids who have gone through this transition, I know how helpful it can be to have some easy ideas on hand!

Food Modifications and Safety Notes
At this age, many toddlers can enjoy modified versions of the same foods the rest of the family is eating. The key is making foods safe and manageable for your child's current eating skills.
And just a note, all children develop on their own timeline. My daughter had a lot of challenges developing her feeding skills and was later diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome at age 2. We had to, and still do, modify some foods to best support her. Offering her finger foods that she could hold was incredibly helpful, along with cutting foods into sizes and shapes that worked best for her.
Some foods may need additional modifications to reduce choking risk. For example, quarter grapes and cherry tomatoes, spread nut or seed butters thinly, and avoid hard, round, or really sticky foods that may be difficult for toddlers to manage safely. For firmer foods like raw vegetables, steam or roast them until soft. For foods that require more chewing, such as meat, serve them shredded, ground, thinly sliced, or finely chopped. Always supervise your child while eating and adjust foods based on their individual eating abilities.

Fritters and patties are some of my favourite finger foods for one year olds because they are soft, easy to hold, and so versatile. They're a great way to introduce different flavours and textures, and many freeze well, making them perfect for meal prep and daycare lunches. Pair them with a dip like yogurt, hummus, or applesauce for a little extra fun!

These Sweet Potato Apple Fritters are soft, easy to hold, and hold up well in lunchboxes. I love pairing them with yogurt for dipping or serving alongside fruit and some steamed or roasted veggies.

You can cut them into squares, strips, bars, or even fun shapes using cookie cutters. Their soft texture makes them a great option for one year olds who are developing their self-feeding skills.

They're incredibly versatile and work well for breakfasts, lunchboxes, snacks, or on the go. With both sweet and savoury options, they're also a great way to incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, and seeds for added fibre and iron.

Pancakes, waffles, and French toast aren't just for breakfast! Cut into strips or fun shapes, these foods can make excellent finger foods for one year olds. They are familiar, easy to customize, and pair well with dips like yogurt, nut butter (spread thinly), or fruit sauce like applesauce or a strawberry chia jam.
#17. Mini Banana Pancakes
Mini Banana Pancakes are perfect for one year olds and can be enjoyed plain, dipped in yogurt, served with a thin layer of nut butter, or paired with some strawberry chia jam. They taste great warm or cold, so you don't need to worry about reheating, or you can serve them warm in a thermos. This Sweet Potato Rigatoni is one of my favourite easy pasta meals. I simply roast a small sweet potato and blend it right into the sauce along with some hemp hearts for a boost of healthy fats, fibre, and iron. My kids always seem to get a kick out of rigatoni noodles since they're slightly larger and just seem more fun to eat.

This Parmesan Crusted Chicken Pasta is a delicious cheesy pasta with shredded chicken mixed in. Toddler Tip
If you're serving fruits that tend to be a bit slippery, like mango or nectarine, I like to roll them in ground flax, hemp hearts, or finely shredded coconut to help make them easier for your child to grip and pick up. This also provides a little nutrition boost!
