How Many Snacks Does My Toddler Need?
Toddlers have small tummies, so they need to eat every 2-3 hours. Snacks can help bridge the gap between meals and support kids with the energy they need. Some children may naturally eat more at meals and may not need as many snacks, so it is always best to always follow your child’s lead. But in general, most toddlers do well with 2-3 snacks per day, typically a mid-morning snack, mid-afternoon snack, and for some kids, a bedtime snack.
(For a list of my top bedtime snacks, check out my post on Best Bedtime Snacks for Toddlers and Kids or my list of over 25 Healthy Toddler Snacks)
That said, we do want to avoid constant snacking, which can interfere with a child’s appetite at mealtimes. So if you find your child is constantly asking for snacks and then not eating much at meals, you may want to gently explore some supportive mealtime boundaries. This helps kids come to the table hungry and ready to eat, while still feeling confident snacks will be offered regularly throughout the day.

How to Build a Balanced Snack
A simple way to build a balanced snack is to think of snacks as mini-meals and pair two or more food groups together. Ideally including:
- a fibrous carbohydrates food (i,e., fruit, veggies, whole grains) +
- a source of protein and/or fat (i.e., yogurt, cheese, nut/seed butters, avocado, egg).
This combo helps toddlers stay full longer and keep their energy steady.

Frozen Summer Snack Ideas For Kids
Frozen snacks are THE BEST on hot days! They are perfect for cooling down toddlers after outdoor play or for enjoying outside on the grass or at the beach.

Tip: For younger toddlers, you may need to let the frozen snacks thaw slightly to soften the texture.
Cool No-Cook Snack Ideas for Kids and Toddlers
These no-cook snacks are so quick and easy to throw together. They are perfect for when you need to get a fun snack on the table FAST!

Key Lime Yogurt Dip and Fruit
- Mix together 1 cup Greek yogurt with juice of ½ a lime and a teaspoon maple syrup. Serve with fresh fruit!
Healthy No Bake Energy Balls & Bars
We love having energy balls and bars on hand. These snacks are nutrient-packed, easy to prep ahead of time, and perfect for tossing into a lunch bag or backpack.

Store-Bought Granola Bar Options for Toddlers
Sometimes you just need some easy snacks you can grab and bring with you. Here are a few of my go-to store bought bars that hold up well in summer heat and are kid-friendly!
- Larabars – I have always been a huge fan of Larabars because I appreciate their simple ingredients. They also pack 4g of fibre per bar, which I would consider a pretty good amount!
- That’s It Bars – I love these because they are literally just fruit as the ingredients. They also travel really well, they don’t have to be kept cold, and are perfect for summer outings.
- Made Good Bars – Made Good has a number of products, but we really like the granola bites. These are tree-nut free and dairy-free, so they are a great option if there are any allergies.
Summer Muffins (baking required but worth it!)
We love having muffins batch prepped and in the freezer ready to pull out for any summer outings. All of these muffins freeze well, and incorporate lots of summer fruits and veggies!

Simple Assembly Snacks for Kids
When time is short or energy is low, simple assembly snacks are the way to go. These are quick to pull together using ingredients you likely already have, no cooking required!
- Ants on a log – Cut some celery sticks, add a little peanut butter, and sprinkle some chocolate chips on top
- Whole grain crackers with nut or seed butter (try this supercharged high protein, high fibre nut and seed butter!
- Rice cakes with hummus or avocado spread on top
- Apple slices (steamed if needed) and thin layer of almond butter with hemp hearts sprinkled on top
- Cinnamon Apples
- Toddler “charcuterie” board – fruit, cheese, and crackers (bonus tip: use a little muffin pan and put the different items in the muffin spots)
- Cottage cheese or yogurt and fruit
- Whole grain crackers with cheese slices
- Veggies (steamed if needed) with hummus or high protein guacamole
- Hard boiled egg with veggies and fruit
Easy Summer Smoothies For Kids
Smoothies are a great way to stay hydrated in the summertime! They are packed with nourishing foods, and provide protein, fibre, and important vitamins and minerals.

Need to take the smoothie on the go? You can pour your smoothie into a reusable pouch, or here are a few store-bought pouch options for an easy snack.
Baby Gourmet Pouches – I love these pouches and their wide variety of flavours. A helpful option when in a pinch! And in the summertime, try freezing them ahead of time and using it like a mini ice pack!
Mama Chia Squeezes – These pouches pack a little extra protein and a boost of omega-3 fats, thanks to the chia seeds! They’re a great on-the-go option for summer outings, easy to toss in your bag and perfect for a quick, nourishing snack.
Whether you’re heading to the beach, packing lunches for daycare, or just trying to keep your toddler cool and fed at home, I hope this list of summer snack ideas gives you some fresh inspiration. From frozen treats to no-cook pairings, smoothies to store-bought staples, it doesn’t have to be fancy to be nourishing!
And remember, you don’t need to do it all. Snacks are just one part of the puzzle of feeding kids and you’re doing great. ❤️
