As a dietitian and mom, I know that allergen-friendly school lunches can sometimes feel like a puzzle, especially when you're juggling multiple restrictions at once, alongside finding foods that your child will actually eat. There are many priority food allergens recognized by Health Canada and by the FDA in the US and every family's needs are different. The ideas below focus on some of the most common food allergies that come up in school settings (although not all) - the lunches are free from peanuts and tree nuts, and many are also free from dairy, egg, and wheat, with simple swaps noted throughout so you can adapt them to your family's needs.

A quick note on gluten: I've included gluten-free adaptations where it's straightforward, such as using certified gluten-free oats or gluten-free bread. If you suspect your child has celiac disease or a wheat allergy, I'd encourage you to talk with your child's physician and healthcare team before making dietary changes as proper testing is important.

    Helpful Resources for Food Allergies

Every family's needs are different, and allergen policies can vary between schools and classrooms, so it's always worth checking your school's specific guidelines on packed lunches. This post is not meant to be a deep dive into various food allergies, but instead provide some ideas and modifications for some of the common allergens. If you're looking for more information on food allergies or navigating dietary restrictions at school, these organizations provide excellent evidence-based information:

    • Kids with Food Allergies
    • Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology

Building a Balanced Allergen-Friendly Lunchbox for Kids

When building school lunches I like to consider the PFFF + Colour formula. Protein, Fat, Fibre, Fun + Colour. This approach still works even with navigating allergen restrictions, and you'll notice it reflected in each of the lunch ideas below. But also know, lunches don't need to check every single box all the time! For more information on building out lunches, and a list of ideas to mix and match, check out my free Dietitian's Guide to Easier School Lunches.

    Allergen-Friendly School Lunch Ideas

All of the lunch ideas below are free from peanuts and tree nuts. Many are also dairy-free, egg-free, and gluten-free, with simple swaps noted for each. As always, be sure to read ingredient labels carefully, as ingredients and manufacturing processes can change over time. Please adjust amounts of food accordingly for your child.

Modify raw firm fruits and vegetables based on your child’s age and chewing skills; cook, thinly slice, grate, or cut into small pieces as needed. For younger children, you may also choose to squish or cut blueberries.

    #1. Build-Your-Own Smoothie Bowl Lunchbox

    Allergen Info

Free from: Peanuts & tree nuts · Egg · Sesame
With simple swaps: Dairy-free (use a plant-based milk and yogurt) · Gluten-free (use certified GF granola)

Smoothie bento box for school lunch for kids

Make a thick smoothie and pack it in a leakproof thermos (we love the OmieBox, which I've used here in this picture) to keep it cold until lunchtime, then include a variety of toppings in the lunchbox for a fun, build-your-own meal. Toppings like fruit, hemp hearts, unsweetened shredded coconut, and gluten-free granola work well. Use a plant-based milk and yogurt to keep this dairy-free. A plant-based milk like soy milk can be a great option as it tends to have more protein than most other plant-based milks.

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Strawberry Smoothie using this Thick Smoothie Bowl recipe here, and using a plant-based yogurt and plant-based milk beverage
    • Gluten-free and nut-free granola (Bob's Red Mill, Rawcology, and MadeGood are good options)
    • Finely shredded unsweetened coconut
    • Mango
    • Cucumber slices

#2. Sunflower Seed Butter Sandwich with Chia Jam on Gluten-Free Bread

    Allergen Info

Free from: Peanuts & tree nuts · Dairy · Sesame
With simple swaps: Egg-free (skip the hard-boiled egg, add avocado or guacamole) · Gluten-free (use certified GF bread)

Sunflower seed butter is a great nut butter alternative and spreads easily on sandwiches. Mix up the filling by using sunflower seed butter + banana slices or seed butter paired with chia jam. Use a gluten-free bread like Carbonaut or Little Northern Bakehouse (depending on where you live, there will be different options available). If you're packing this lunch for a child with an egg allergy, simply skip the hard-boiled egg and add avocado or guacamole for dipping the bell peppers instead.

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Sunflower Seed Butter Sandwich on gluten-free bread with strawberry chia jam
    • Cut-up strawberries
    • Blueberries
    • Freeze-dried smoothie melts
    • Bell pepper slices
    • Hard boiled egg (or avocado/guacamole for egg-free)

#3. Dairy-Free Pasta with Veggies and Fruit

    Allergen Info

Free from: Peanuts & tree nuts · Dairy · Egg · Sesame
With simple swaps: Gluten-free (use chickpea, lentil, or buckwheat pasta)

There are lots of gluten-free pasta options available now, and chickpea- and lentil-based pastas can provide extra fibre, protein, and iron. For a creamy dairy-free sauce, try this coconut milk-based pasta sauce from Allergen Friendly Awareness (linked below), which is both dairy-free and nut-free.

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Dairy-free pasta sauce (use gluten-free noodles such as chickpea, lentil, or buckwheat for a gluten-free option)
    • Apple slices
    • Blueberries
    • Cucumber slices
    • That's It Bar

    #4. Oat Pancake Bento Box

    Allergen Info

Free from: Peanuts & tree nuts · Dairy · Sesame
With simple swaps: Egg-free (use a flax egg) · Gluten-free (use certified gluten-free oats)

Pancake bento box for lunch kindergarten kids

These simple oat pancakes make a delicious lunchbox option. If you need this lunch to be gluten-free, be sure to choose oats that are labelled certified gluten-free, as regular oats may come into contact with wheat, barley, or rye during growing and processing. These pancakes can easily be made egg-free by swapping in a flax egg. I love to cut the pancakes into star shapes to add a little extra fun. I've paired them here with a strawberry chia jam for dipping (kids love to dip!).

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Easy Oat Pancakes cut into star shapes (swap out the regular egg and use a flax egg if needing to be egg-free)
    • Strawberry chia jam for dipping
    • Cut-up strawberries
    • Mandarin orange segments
    • Plant-based "Havarti" cheese slices
    • Air-Fryer Carrot Fries

    #5. Build-Your-Own Parfait Bento Box

    Allergen Info

Free from: Peanuts & tree nuts · Egg · Sesame
With simple swaps: Dairy-free (use a coconut- or soy-based yogurt) · Gluten-free (use certified GF granola and GF muffin)

yogurt parfait bento box for children

A build-your-own parfait is a fun and easy lunch that can be adapted to be allergen-friendly. Choose a dairy-free yogurt alternative, such as a coconut- or soy-based yogurt, and pair it with fruit, seeds, and a certified gluten-free and nut-free granola. If possible, look for a fortified yogurt alternative to help provide nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. Soy-based yogurts can be a great option, as they often provide a little more protein than coconut-based varieties.

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Plant-based yogurt with hemp hearts
    • Gluten-free and nut-free granola
    • Half a homemade gluten-free, nut-free, egg-free muffin
    • Carrot and cucumber slices
    • Mango, raspberries, and strawberries

Image of bento box with pita, hummus, mango and cut up vegetables.

Gluten-free pita and hummus make an easy, packable lunch option. Pair the pita with hummus and sliced veggies like cucumbers, bell peppers, or carrots for a balanced lunchbox. Hummus provides fibre and plant-based protein, and pairs well with vegetables for dipping.

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Gluten-free pita
    • Hummus
    • Carrot sticks and snap peas (serve cooked for younger children)
    • Mango slices with hemp hearts

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Blueberry Chia Baked Oatmeal (use a plant-based milk for dairy-free, flax egg for egg-free)
    • Cooked and shelled edamame beans (contains soy; cut in half for younger children)
    • Cucumber slices
    • Mango slices
    • Applesauce pouch

#8. Black Bean & Corn Quesadillas Lunchbox

With simple swaps: Gluten-free (use certified gluten-free corn tortillas or other GF tortillas). Dairy-free (use a dairy-free cheese)

allergen-friendly lunchbox for kids with corn and black bean quesadilla

This recipe can easily be made gluten-free by using certified-gluten-free corn tortillas or other gluten-free tortillas. Just be sure to check the label on your specific brand, as some include wheat with corn or are processed in facilities that also handle wheat. Black beans are a great source of plant-based protein, fibre, and iron, and pair well with a dairy-free cheese for a filling and nourishing lunchbox option.

    chicken strips lunchbox for kids

These air fryer chicken nuggets are a kid-favourite lunchbox option that are surprisingly very easy to make! Made with ground chicken and a handful of simple ingredients, they're free from most common allergens by default. Use certified gluten-free panko breadcrumbs to make them gluten-free. Make a batch ahead of time and pack them cold or warm in a thermos for an easy school lunch.

    #10. Build-Your-Own Taco Lunchbox

    Allergen Info

Free from: Peanuts & tree nuts · Dairy · Egg · Sesame
With simple swaps: Gluten-free (use certified gluten-free corn tortillas or taco shells)

A build-your-own taco lunchbox is a fun lunch option that kids love to assemble themselves. Season ground beef with simple spices like cumin, garlic powder, and chili powder and either pack the meat cold, (ensure it's on an ice pack and stays cold until lunch), or hot in a thermos if you know for sure it can stay hot until lunchtime. Many corn taco shells are naturally gluten-free - just check the label on your specific brand as some are processed in facilities that also handle wheat. Pack the shells, beef, and toppings separately to keep everything fresh until lunchtime.

    Included in the lunchbox

    • Seasoned ground beef (packed warm in a thermos)
    • Corn taco shells (use a soft corn tortilla for younger children, as hard taco shells can break into firm, sharp pieces that may increase choking risk)
    • Shredded lettuce
    • Diced tomato
    • Guacamole or avocado slices
    • Salsa
    • Berries and grapes (quarter grapes lengthwise for children under 5)

    Allergen-Friendly Snack Ideas

Here are some simple allergen-friendly snack ideas. They are all nut-free, and can easily be modified to be gluten-free, egg-free, and dairy-free.

    • Apple slices and pumpkin seed butter or sunflower seed butter (option to sprinkle hemp hearts on top)
    • Banana sushi (banana, sunflower seed butter, and hemp hearts)
