Smoothies can be a great way to pack in some nutrition for kids - but I've found you don't want to go too overboard with trying to incorporate a million things that it ends up being an odd flavour and unpleasant texture. That's why I love this smoothie, it not only has a lot of great nutrition from the spinach and chia seeds, but it also tastes great and has a smooth texture!

green smoothie for kids all blended up.

Blend on high speed for 30-45 seconds, until smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides if needed.

Hint: I like to add the liquid first to help everything blend more smoothly, especially when using frozen fruit and leafy greens.

    Substitutions

    • Milk - You can use dairy milk, oat milk, or soy milk in place of almond milk.
    • Orange – For a smoother texture, you can use fresh squeezed orange juice instead of the whole orange.
    • Banana – Adds natural sweetness and creaminess. You can swap for mango, but the texture may be slightly less creamy.
    • Avocado – Can be left out, but it helps create a smoother texture and adds healthy fats.
    • Chia seeds – You can swap for hemp hearts.

    Variations

    • Protein boost - add ½ cup plain yogurt
    • Fibre boost - in addition to the chia seeds, add 1 tablespoon hemp hearts or ground flax

    Toddler Tip

It can be tempting to “hide” greens in smoothies, but I always encourage being open and transparent about ingredients. The green colour is already a bit of a giveaway in here, but you can go further by even letting your child help add the spinach to the smoothie. We also like to give this smoothie a fun name like the "Green Hulk Smoothie"!

    FAQ

How can I make this smoothie smoother for kids?

To make the smoothie even smoother, you can use freshly squeezed orange juice instead of the whole peeled orange. This helps avoid any pulp or membrane texture, but will reduce the fibre slightly.

Does this green smoothie taste like spinach?

No, this smoothie doesn’t taste strongly like spinach. Spinach has a very mild flavour, and it’s balanced by the sweetness of the banana, pineapple, and orange.
